China was one of the first countries to have contact with
Islam thru the Ancient Silk Road trading routes from the
Middle East. The first Mosques were established in the 7th
Century within a few years of the creation of Islam.
Today, although the Chinese Muslim population is only
2-3%, thats about 30 Million in a country of over One
Billion, more than many Middle Eastern or other Islamic
Nations, or the entire population of Canada.

Xi'an was the ancient capital of China and the start of the Silk Road to
Istanbul. Arab traders long had contact with China and the Great Mosque
of Xi'an was built in the 7th century with the birth of Islam.
Xi'an today is home to a very large Muslim population inside the Ancient
Walled City, along with the 7th Century Great Mosque built in Chinese
Pagoda Style, and the West Mosque in traditional arabic style. There is also a
lively Muslim Bazaar where food vendors cook Central Asian Cuisine in more
middle eastern style such as grilled lamb skewers and naan bread.
